String changes make Firefox 3% faster

Darin checked in some major string changes a few hours ago (231995). Estimations based on Firefox Tinderbox data:

Startup (Ts)	3.1% faster (noisy data)	3.4% faster (noisy data)
New window (Txul)	3.8% faster	3.0% faster
Page load (Tp)	2.6% faster	3.3% faster
Code size (Z)	2.1% smaller	1.2% smaller

(Darin made similar estimations and included data for Seamonkey.)

I plan to compare download size and memory use once a new official build is avaiable.

Fixed on branch: 233149 - download manage window blinks non-stop if new download is added while not in focus. (Fixed by disabling the blinking completely for now.)

Ben Goodger plans to fix the license bug at the last minute, at the same time he changes the version number to 0.8 on the branch. Hopefully his fix will also fix the Flash installation bug (both problems involve line breaks).

0.8 will be released next Monday

Ben says Firebird 0.8 will be out next Monday:

It's Monday February 9 now. This is the first time I've been confident enough to give a date. This release is going to be the best Firebird yet.

Update: Firefox 0.8 (note the new name) was released Feb 9. Burning Edge entry about 0.8.
