2083 is the limit for links in IE (a link above this limit will fail silently)
2083 is also the limit for favorites -- and it's also the maxchars in the 'location' field of an internet shortcut!


IE 6.0.2600.0000 Win98

2083 is still the limit for javascript: *links*, but bookmarklets are now limited to 508 characters.  
I hope Microsoft fixes that soon...


Mozilla build from 03/10/2001 on Win98

if you click properties for the 10000 bookmarklet, click the href textbox, and press the End key, the textbox appears blank

Bookmarks truncated to 1848 characters when the browser is restarted.
(With 1849, the semicolon at the end of the bookmarklet will be chopped off.)


Opera 5.02 Win98

4097 is the limit for link length
 "syntax error" when exceeding
4061 is the limit for favorites
 no error message when exceeding; clicking bookmarklet does nothing

opera is very slow to test with the bookmarklet generated by this page.  why?

4097 is the limit for link length

 trying to add a longer favorite says "too long"
personal bar favorites can be up to 4097.
